Coffee Desserts

I admire people who don’t need a daily cup or two or Coffee.  Of course, I don’t fall into this group.  And in fact, I’ve been known to turn non-Coffee drinkers, into Coffee aficionados.

Since I love the aroma and taste of Coffee (and require the “get up and go” this miracle beverage imparts) and adore Desserts, what better than to combine the two?

Looks like I’m not the only fan of Coffee Desserts.

Graeters Mocha Chocolate Chip

Graeter’s, a Cincinnati-based ice cream company, founded in 1870, sells two Coffee-based ice cream flavors – Mocha Chocolate Chip and Coffee.  Mocha Chocolate Chip is so popular it’s one of Graeter’s six core flavors, offered in grocery stores outside of its main trading area.  While the company had contemplated offering just one Coffee-based ice cream – Mocha Chocolate Chip – there were enough fans of Coffee Ice Cream to convince the company to keep offering both Coffee flavors.

New York City-based Éclair Bakery, a French bakery, offers an extensive variety of Éclairs, including, you guessed it, a Coffee variety.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with drinking your Coffee Dessert.  An Affogato is a shot of Expresso over a scoop or gelato or ice cream.  But if you’re looking for something a bit more elaborate, Cynthia Leung described a very intriguing sounding  drink crafted by her store, SOMA Chocolatemaker in Toronto: “Three separate layers, all of equal portions, of: dark chocolate; espresso; and semi-whipped cream.  All meant to be drunk together (not mixed), a study in contrast….”

And Coffee can liven up Chocolates.  Cynthia pointed out that Coffee and Chocolate have been paired together for a long time.  Her Vietnamese Coffee Truffle, with a coffee-infused dark chocolate layer covering a white chocolate ganache, is a popular item.

But Coffee doesn’t always steal the Dessert spotlight.  Adding a small amount of Espresso powder to a recipe calling for Chocolate adds a depth of flavor and enhances the Chocolate flavor, without calling attention to itself.

Coffee Flour

When I was doing research for this posting, I read about an alternative flour — Coffee Flour.  As a city dweller, I generally don’t read farming magazines, but according to a fascinating article in Modern Farmer, there are actually two types of Coffee Flour.  One type of Coffee Flour is obtained from grinding up less roasted Coffee beans.  Adding this Coffee Flour to baked goods bestows a mild, nutty flavor and packs a real antioxidant punch since less roasted Coffee Beans are higher in antioxidants.  And the second type of Coffee Flour is derived from grinding up other parts of the Coffee plant.  Fittingly, a company with the name, Coffee Flour, is spearheading the production of this second type of Coffee Flour, which is a nutritional powerhouse and really more of a spice than a Flour.

How can I enjoy Coffee?  Thankfully, more ways than ever before!

Dessert Wish List

Grilled Coffee Cake from Southport Grocery and Cafe

Around this time last year I devoted a posting to favorite desserts of mine that, sadly, are no longer available.  I’ll be more optimistic this year, and instead, will focus on desserts which I hope will start receiving the attention they deserve.

Here’s my Dessert Wish List:

  • Coffee Cake:  It’s funny—when I was younger I didn’t give Coffee Cake a second glance.  It was the rich, fancy desserts that captured my fancy.  While I still enjoy gooey desserts, now I often find myself craving Coffee Cake.  And lest anyone think Coffee Cake is only a “Plain Jane” dessert, the image at the top of this posting, of Southport Grocery’s Grilled Coffee Cake, shows that Coffee Cake can certainly be gussied up. My wish is to see Coffee Cake appear more frequently on restaurant/bakery menus and to change its image—from that of a brunch/breakfast food only to one of a Dessert that can be enjoyed any time.  (Also see the Dessert Surveillance posting on Coffee Cake.)

  • Coffee-Based Desserts:  Granted, this is a very broad category, encompassing Coffee Ice Cream, Mocha Cake, Espresso Cookies and Biscotti, Chocolate Bars with Coffee, and much more.  In addition to relishing the jolt from the java, I adore the taste of Coffee, and think it enhances most desserts.   One of my favorite Coffee Desserts is Graeter’s Mocha Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.  Since Coffee pairs so beautifully with so many dessert ingredients, my wish is for the rich tang of Coffee to be found in all manner of desserts—from fancy pastries to homey Chocolate Chip Cookies and Brownies to luxurious cream-based Desserts.

  • Tres Leches Cake:  I can’t overlook one of my favorite Milk/Cream-based Desserts—Tres Leches Cake, a Cake made with three different types of Milk/Cream.  It’s one of these simple Desserts that’s just amazing.  Of course it can be spruced up so it’s no longer simple. My all-time favorite Tres Leches Cake sported a Cheesecake layer, in addition to a Raspberry filling.  And, unfortunately, it’s no longer available at my local Mexican restaurant although a Salted Caramel Tres Leches Cake is on the menu.  My wish is for Tres Leches Cakes to be available at most bakeries and restaurants.

  • Smaller-Size Portions of Desserts:  Anyone who reads the Dessert Surveillance blog knows that I’m a Dessert Glutton—I just love Desserts and can’t get enough of them.  To prevent my cholesterol level and weight from skyrocketing, I try to ration my dessert intake.  (Of course during the holidays, I’ve been a bit, shall we say, lax, in my rationing, but I digress.) That’s why I welcome the smaller-size dessert trend.  It saves me from having to cut a Dessert in half and either enjoying the 2nd half the next day or trashing the 2nd half.  To be brutally honest—it’s not so much that the smaller size saves me fat, calories, and sugar.  It’s more that I can indulge in two desserts instead of one!

All the best wishes for a wonderful 2015 filled with delicious Desserts!

Early Summer Product Roundup

Let’s look at some products that are either seasonal, new, or just plain interesting.

Christopher Elbow's Fresh Lemon Chocolate - Photo Courtesy of Christopher Elbow (Kansas City, MO)

Christopher Elbow’s Fresh Lemon Chocolate – a combination of Lemon Pate de Fruit (a lemon jelly candy) and Lemon White Chocolate Ganache.  As I adore white chocolate and like lemon, and think they pair beautifully, I think it’s a pity you don’t see more desserts with this combination. Interestingly, even though lemons are available year-round, this is more of a seasonal summer treat.  Since lemon and other citrus fruits are so refreshing, citrus desserts are firmly entrenched in the summer months.

Another summer citrus dessert is Broadway Baker’s Key Lime Cookie.  (Also see the Dessert Surveillance posting on Key Lime Pie.). It’s a butter cookie infused with Key Lime juice and zest and to complete the summery Key Lime package, it’s topped with a smooth Key Lime frosting.

Key Lime also makes its presence known in frozen yogurt.  Jeni’s offers a limited-time “Cultured Key Lime Pie Frozen Yogurt” flavor. In addition to Key Lime juice, milk and yogurt, this frozen treat sports pieces of graham cracker crust.

Peaches are in season in the summer and what better way to celebrate their arrival than to combine them with ice cream.  On Graeter’s line-up is a limited edition Summer Peach flavor.

And for those of us that are serious about both our Coffee and our Chocolate and like the idea of combining them, Tcho’s Mokaccino Bar is a Milk Chocolate Bar with Blue Bottle brand Coffee.

Of course, I couldn’t include just one White Chocolate candy.   Italian Chocolatier, Guido Sobino, offers a Bianco Pralinato (White Chocolate Bar with Crunchy Hazelnuts).

Venchi's Chocolate-Coated Cremino Bigusto Piemonte Bar - Photo Courtesy of Venchi (Italy)

Chocolate-Coated Cremino Bigusto Piemonte is a chunky bar with a layer of white chocolate, a layer of hazelnut paste and to make things even more interesting, both layers are wrapped in a thin coating of dark chocolate.  This Chocolate Bar is the product of another Italian Chocolatier, Venchi.

Do-it-yourselfers can purchase cacao butter only – that’s right, cacao butter,  the foundation of white chocolate.  Since you’re adding sugar and flavorings you’re customizing your White Chocolate Truffles.  Choc Chick, the company that offers this Cacao Butter, also sells kits with Cacao Powder so you can craft your own Chocolate Truffles.

So many summer desserts…..why isn’t summer longer?
